Helpful Hints
- Layout Blind Basics -

...by the Avery Pro-Staff

CONCEALMENT:

No matter if you are hunting out of alayout blind, pit, or hedge row blind, blind concealment is the number #1 factor in a hunter’s success.

Always “mud” or paint your new layout blind to eliminate the shine that is pre-sent on the fabric.

    1. To “mud” a blind, mix dirt from the area you are going to hunt with water. Add enough water until the mud is the con-sistency of paint. Apply with an old brush and allow the mud to dry. If you wish, you can sweep off the excess when drying is complete.
    2. To paint your blind, use the color of flat khaki to lightly spray your blind. Apply just enough paint to eliminate the shine on the fabric.

To assist with layout blind concealment, use Avery KillerWeed on your layout blind. This will reduce the amount of brushing that will have to be done to the blind in the morning.

When you attach KillerWeed to your lay-out blind, leave your KillerWeed longer so it flows off of the blind. This will eliminate the blind’s “footprint”.

You can attach KillerWeed a number of dif-ferent ways. The two most popular are using zip ties or tying the KillerWeed on directly with cinch loops. See the ac-companying photo on reverse for a demonstration of the cinch loop.

Always hunt your layout blind in its lowest position that is comfortable to the shooter. This will minimize the blinds outline and shadow.

To further lower the layout blinds profile, dig a hole in the shape of your blind down about 4-8 inches.
Use decoys around your layout blind to as-sist with hiding your layout blind.

SAFETY:

Safety first – Always have your gun pointed down range away from the other hunt-ers in your group.

Never hunt a dog out of the same layout blind as some one using a gun. Always use a separate dog blind and apply the same efforts to concealing it as you do your own.

When using a frame blind such as a Fin-isher, Ground Force, or Migrator, al-ways have your gun pointed out of the blind down range.

SET-UP TACTICS:

When setting up your layout blinds and decoy spread, determine the position of your blinds first. This will make it easier to establish your “kill hole(s)” in relation to the blinds.

When setting up your layout blind, shift the blind to 30- 45 degrees to the right for right handed shooters or 30-45 degrees to the left for left handed shooters. This will allow the shooter to cover the “kill hole” while shooting from a seated position.

Use the terrain to assist with hiding your layout blind. By hunting on the down side of a hill, in a swale or depression in the field, you can minimize your layout blind’s outline and shadow.

Whenever possible, set up your layout blinds with the sun at your back.
