ThermaCELL® Mosquito Repellent by Mike Bard

May 2008

Game Hogg Igniting the ThermaCELL®

Anyone who spends time outdoors in the spring or summer months knows about mosquitoes and how annoying they can be. I’ve tried several different types of sprays and lotions over the years, but many run off when you sweat or just don’t seem to work well. Not to mention that you smell like mosquito repellent and your skin is always greasy from them.

This spring I purchased a ThermaCell® appliance with a holster and have used it for turkey hunting, fishing and dog training with excellent results – no bites. It creates an invisible shield 15 feet around you that deters mosquitoes and black flies. The unit runs off a small butane cartridge that is used to create heat and warm a mat that holds the actual repellent. Once the mat is heated it releases a vapor into the air that wards off mosquitoes and black flies.

The holster attaches nicely to your belt or vest, as well as, allows you to store extra butane cartridges and repellent mats.

The cost of this unit and supplies you’ll continually need to re-purchase does exceed that of sprays, but in my opinion the extra cost is worth it.

Keeping your shotgun clean in the field and getting it in and out of the field can be a challenge, especially when you are trying to hide in dusty or wet stubble and carry decoys and other equipment into and out of the field.  Avery® offers the Mud CaseTM for your gun protection needs. It rolls up to fit easily in your blind bag or in your layout blind, and for guns not having a sling, it is a true asset in carrying your gun to and from the field all while keeping your hands free to carry other equipment. Its adjustable shoulder strap and ATB pad keep it securely on your shoulder during the haul in and out. If you are hunting from an Avery® Power Hunter, the Mud CaseTM is also useful as a mat to keep your gun off the ground during the hunt. The Avery® Mud CaseTM will fit shotguns up to 54" in length and offers a pocket for small item storage and a flag sleeve that can hold up to three flags. It is made of 900D DuraMax polyester and also features a D-ring to hang it up to dry or store. This gun case is a field hunter's dream come true and I use it every time I go into the field.

Avery® Box Call & Double Friction Call Case by David Rearick

Avery® Box & Double Friction Call Case w/ Zink® Prototype Crystal Power HenTM..

To a turkey hunter, keeping your calls clean and protected is a very important part of your season. When you are scrambling down a hillside to get in front of a bird, you don't want your box call to give out a screech from rattling in your vest spooking the birds, or to inadvertently sit on your slate or glass call cracking it down the center. In order to keep things organized in my turkey vest and keep them dry and safe from the elements, I like to use the box and double friction call cases made by Avery® Outdoors. They keep the calls dry when the weather gets a little wet, and keep them safe from abuse throughout the season.

Avery® Box Call Case:
Not only does this case keep your box call safe and secure, the neoprene strap keeps the call held tightly to eliminate any un-intentional or unwanted sound while you are on the move. It also has a Velcro side pouch perfect for a piece of sand paper and some chalk for the season. With a snap click to hook to your belt or vest, this item makes carrying your box call easy and convenient while also keeping it safe and sound.

Avery® Double Friction Call Case:
Over the course of my turkey hunting career I have broken a few slate and glass calls from sitting on them  when I was in a  hurry to get situated. Also, many times when it gets damp outside, just leaving them in my vest allows them to soak in moisture through the cloth and they become worthless when it gets to go time. With the Avery
® double friction call case I can eliminate both of these problems easily. The case holds two of my favorite friction calls along with two strikers. With the small side pouch on the front I can easily store mouth calls and some sandpaper  to keep everything in working order. The case is small enough to fit in any pocket on my turkey vest, yet big enough for most standard style friction calls. Simply put, this case keeps my calls safe and clean even in the most adverse conditions, all while keeping me organized as the season progresses.

Avery® Power FlagTM and Super FlagTM by Mike Bard

March 2008

Rusty Hallock Working the Power FlagTM

A flag is one of the most important pieces of equipment in a goose hunter’s arsenal and some will even argue that it’s more valuable than a goose call. When you first see geese off in the distance, too far away for them to hear your call, your flag is what initially grabs their attention and some geese like to see the flag all the way in.

I’ve tried a number of flags of the years of chasing geese, most of which never lasted more than a couple months of the season before they broke.  Many companies use a wooden dowel in creating their product, which seems to soak in moisture and eventually wood splits and typically that split occurs where the holes were drilled for the fiberglass rods or where the screw was placed.

Avery Outdoors® has two newly designed flags on the market today, the Power FlagTM and the Super FlagTM. The difference is only in the detail of the fabric used on the flag, the Power FlagTM is black and white, while the Super FlagTM offers goose feather detail. There are options for both flags to have the underside of the flag’s fabric to be camoflauged to hide the flag better when not being used.

Avery® built these flags to not only with stand the rigors of hunting, but to offer more realistic motion and comfort for the hunter. I have used two Power FlagsTM over the last two seasons and this last season added a Super FlagTM to the mix, all of which have held up to 50+ days in the field a season. Each model of flag also has a golf club-like grip as a handle making it more comfortable and easier to hold on to the flag when operating.

Avery® FinisherTM Blind Bag by David Rearick

March 2008

When I go into the field I want to be able to carry the right amount of gear without making extra trips. The FinisherTM Blind Bag allows me to do just that all the while keeping my gear safe, secure, and most importantly dry. Calls, shells, a mini tripod, extra gloves, are all the basics that stay in the bag all season long amongst other items. The side pockets even allow me to carry a full assortment of choke tubes, my rangefinder, and other items that come in handy when times get tough. The interior even goes a step further in terms of waterproofing with a pocket big enough to hold sunrise tables, regs, and other important documents I don’t want to dry out after each hunt. When it comes to go time, the blind fits neatly behind the seat of my FinisherTM blind or is stowed under some stubble in the field or marsh. Simple, yet effective organization is something I want in a blind bag, and this does that above and beyond.
