Field Proven Calls Shot Caller by Rusty Hallock
Recently, Field Proven Calls introduced their new single reed duck call; the Shot Caller and I was fortunate to receive one of these new calls. I know that this does not affect the sound of the call, but one of the first things I like to look at when I am considering a call is the feel of the call in the hand and the mouth piece. At this time, all Shot Callers are acrylic with a stainless steel band. The call has a nice balance. The end piece of the call fits comfortably between the index finger and thumb. The mouth piece has no sharp edges, all edges are rounded. All of these features add up to a very comfortable call that is designed for the comfort of the duck hunter. No matter how comfortable a call may be, the true judgment of any duck call is performance. The Shot Caller is a single reed call and even though this is a single reed call, this call is a “meat” call. This is not really a surprise being it was designed by the 2004 World Live Duck Calling Champion, Field Hudnall. You would expect his first duck call offering to be a call designed to be used in the field. Since the Shot Caller is a single reed, it has a little more range in sound then a double reed call. The Shot Caller will not produce the loud ringing high ball that can be heard on the stage in Stuttgart every Thanksgiving Weekend, but don’t let that fool you the Shot Caller has more than enough volume to be a performer in the field or on big water. What is equally impressive is this call can get low and quite for finishing ducks in your favorite honey hole too. Field Proven Calls has built a duck call that is pure hen mallard. The biggest complaint that I hear from beginner duck callers is that single reed calls are more difficult to master; Field Proven Calls Shot Caller design has eliminated or drastically reduced the learning curve for the duck hunter that wants the range of the single reed call, but wants to quickly master the call. The Shot Caller is a single reed duck that is easily mastered even by a novice duck caller. When I received my Shot Caller, I put my call through its paces and it performed flawlessly. As advertised, the Shot Caller has a good range of sound, but more importantly is pure hen mallard. I know what call I will have on my lanyard this upcoming hunting and contest season, it will be the new Field Proven Shot Caller.
