GHG® FFD Rester/Sleeper Decoys by Rusty Hallock

Hunting on Maryland’s Eastern Shore affords goose hunters to see large flights of geese daily. Annually, Maryland winters 400,000-500,000 Canada geese. Besides the large number of geese, Maryland also attracts a large number of hunters. This produces a lot of pressure on the wintering Canada geese. It is not unusual to view a decoy rig in almost every field as you travel through the mid and upper Eastern Shore. This enormous hunting pressure forced me to utilize the most realistic decoy spread available.

My decoy spread is dictated by what the geese are doing in my hunting area. I do not want my decoy spread to look like a hunter’s decoy spread, but live geese on the ground. The one thing I have noticed during my scouting is that geese have a relaxed look about them in the field when they feel safe. While observing geese in the field, I saw geese feeding, a few on the lookout, but more importantly relaxed and sleeping. That is why I chose to add GHG® FFD Rester and Sleeper full bodies to my decoy rig about two years ago. I chose the Fully Flocked versions of these decoys because the flocking adds soft appearance to the decoys, which is similar to using a “stuffer decoy”. The flocking also eliminates the shine that can appear on painted decoys on bluebird days. I have used GHG® FFD decoys for the past 5 seasons. The flocking is more delicate then painted decoys, but with a little extra care and the use of slotted bags, GHG® FFD’s will hold up to the rigors of waterfowl hunting.

GHG® FFD Resters and Sleepers are great additions to water spreads as well. Adding these decoys to the shoreline or sandbar of a water decoy spread adds the finishing touch to a realistic presentation. Besides water spreads, I use GHG® FFD Resters and Sleepers when hunting in a dry field. During my observations, geese will rest and sleep in the fields no matter the temperature. I have observed geese sleeping and relaxing in fields in September through February. When temperatures drop below 20 degrees, I like to place my FFD Resters in the “kill hole”. Geese will have a tendency to land and go to the resting position when the temperature drops below 20 degrees.

Each box of 4 GHG® FFD Rester full bodies comes with one body position and 2 head positions; Rester and Semi-Rester. The box of 4 GHG® FFD Sleeper full bodies comes with one body position and two head positions; 1 upright sleeper and 3 sleepers. Even though you have one carved body position, the RetractaBase® affords the hunter the option of two positions, retracted so the body is sitting on the ground or extended so the body is standing. The round RetractaBase® makes set up quick and easy. It also allows the Rester and Sleeper full bodies to be the natural choice for positioning on and around layout blinds and pits to assist in hiding hunters. Each GHG® FFD Rester and Sleeper full body comes with HotLegs® for realism. For the hunter that wants to add more body and head positions to their decoy spread, plus give their decoy spread the appearance of relaxed geese, the GHG® FFD Rester and Sleeper full bodies make the perfect addition. Remember, you can never have too much realism in your decoy spread.
